Meet Dr. Afonso Issa

Afonso Henrique Teixeira Magalhães Issa is third-year seminary student at Vancouver School of Theology, St. Andrew's Hall. Afonso has chosen to do his field study at Central Presbyterian Church.

Afonso was born in 1984 in Bauru, in the interior of Sao Paulo state, 4 hours from Downtown Sao Paulo.  He grew up in Goiânia, the capital of the state of Goiás, two hours from Brasilia, the Brazilian Federal capital.

Raised by a single mom, Afonso and his brother Rodolfo attended a Christian Presbyterian school, where they learned about Jesus and the Bible on a daily basis.  He was baptized twice, one as a baby in a Catholic Church and again when he was 15 years old in a Presbyterian church where his grandmother was an active member.  After high school, Afonso joined the medical school in a public university of his state, called Universidade Federal de Goiás, where he studied Medicine, Pediatrics, Medical Education. He also completed a PhD in Health Sciences. There he met his wife Louinne with whom he came to Canada with their three daughters and son.

As part of his seminary training, Afonso is doing a field placement at Central Presbyterian Church under the supervision of the Rev. Dr. Victor C. Gavino. Alternating between White Rock Presbyterian Church and Central Presbyterian Church, Afonso will be with us from April to September, for a total of two-hundred hours.  He will attend our worship services on every first and third Sunday of the month.  He will also be onsite every Wednesday, from 2:00 to 9:30 pm from April 24 - September 11, 2024, and will lead a mid-week Bible study from 5:30 to 8:30 pm in the Multi-purpose room .  The evenings will include a potluck-style meal, Bible study, listening to one another, and praying. It is a mix of outreach ministry and a christian education program.

Welcome to Central, Afonso. We are glad you are here with us.
