Lighting the Candle - a Litany
In the beginning, God said, “Let there be light,” and there was light, and it was good.
We gather in the light of God’s truth, shining through the ages.
On this Reformation Sunday, we remember the courage of those who stood for the Gospel, proclaiming salvation by grace through faith.
We light this candle as a symbol of Christ, the Light of the World, who guides us in truth.
As we kindle this flame, we recall the Spirit’s fire that sparked renewal, calling the Church to return to God’s Word.
May this light remind us of God’s unchanging grace and mercy.
Let this candle burn as a witness to the hope we have in Jesus Christ, who reforms and renews us by His love.
Shine in our hearts, O Lord, and lead us in Your everlasting way.
We light this candle in the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit.
Amen. Let Your light shine before us, that we may walk boldly in Your truth!

Scripture readings
Habakkuk 1:1-4, 2:1-4 (NRSV)
The oracle that the prophet Habakkuk saw. O LORD, how long shall I cry for help, and you will not listen? Or cry to you “Violence!” and you will not save? Why do you make me see wrongdoing and look at trouble? Destruction and violence are before me; strife and contention arise. So the law becomes slack and justice never prevails. The wicked surround the righteous— therefore judgment comes forth perverted.
I will stand at my watchpost, and station myself on the rampart; I will keep watch to see what he will say to me, and what he will answer concerning my complaint. Then the LORD answered me and said: Write the vision; make it plain on tablets, so that a runner may read it. For there is still a vision for the appointed time; it speaks of the end, and does not lie. If it seems to tarry, wait for it; it will surely come, it will not delay. Look at the proud! Their spirit is not right in them, but the righteous live by their faith.
Romans 1:16-17 (NRSV)
For I am not ashamed of the gospel; it is the power of God for salvation to everyone who has faith, to the Jew first and also to the Greek. For in it the righteousness of God is revealed through faith for faith; as it is written, “The one who is righteous will live by faith.”

Prayers of the People
The Apostles' Creed
I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth.
I believe in Jesus Christ, God’s only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried; he descended to the dead. On the third day he rose again; he ascended into heaven, he is seated at the right hand of the Father, and he will come again to judge the living and the dead.
I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.

(Responses)
With all Your saints, past and present, we join the eternal song of praise, saying:
Holy, holy, holy Lord, God of power and might,
Heaven and earth are full of your glory.
Hosanna in the highest.
Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord.
Hosanna in the highest.
...
Great is the mystery of faith:
Christ has died,
Christ is risen,
Christ will come again
The Lord's Prayer
Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as in heaven.
Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us.
Save us from the time of trial and deliver us from evil.
For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours now and forever.
Amen.
